About Global Witness

For nearly 25 years, Global Witness has run pioneering campaigns against natural resource-related conflict and corruption and associated environmental and human rights abuses. From Cambodia to Congo, Sierra Leone to Angola, we have exposed the brutality and injustice that results from the fight to access and control natural resource wealth, and have sought to bring the perpetrators of this corruption and conflict to book. Global Witness is headquartered in London and has a U.S. Office in Washington, DC. The U.S. Office’s research and advocacy efforts include the following issues: tackling conflict minerals, combating corruption in the oil, gas and mining sector, addressing illicit financial flows, and combating illegal logging and unsustainable forest use.

 

About the Internship

Each semester – Spring, Summer, and Fall, GW seeks to provide internship opportunities for those seeking to gain experience in the anti-corruption, human rights, and efforts to tackle environmental abuse. The selected candidate will work directly with the Communications team here in our Washington D.C. office and assist in communications and media research relating to anti-corruption policy and investigations into potential corruption and money laundering, human rights and environmental abuses. The position will assist in the development and dissemination of quality digital content, fostering of strong media partnerships, assessment of communications strategies and tactics, and monitoring of various media outlets.

Your work will support the team to achieve campaign goals that challenge and combat corruption, hold companies and governments accountable for their actions, and champion a better world.

Exact start and end dates of the current internship term offered is flexible.

 

Responsibilities may include:

Supporting Social Media Outreach:

  • Draft content for Global Witness’s social media channels, with a particular focus on Twitter and Facebook
  • Monitor, research and identify relevant articles, stories, resources, or other content that is pertinent to our campaigns, and assist with posting to our social media accounts.
  • Help grow Global Witness’s online social networks by increasing followers and interactions, with a focus on the U.S. market.
  • Completes other social media projects as assigned.

Media relations:

  • Build and maintain press lists for relevant US-facing Global Witness campaigns.
  • Monitor the news for Global Witness media mentions as well as relevant news-hooks that Global Witness can respond to.
  • Identify and help build relationships with key journalists covering our campaign areas.

Planning and Posting Digital Content:

  • Coordinate and assist with the creation of social media content including images, video, audio and/or blogs specifically for our U.S. audience.
  • Assist in maintaining and updating the digital content calendar and disseminating to relevant staff.
  • Use forward planning and listening tools to spot opportunities to create social content.
  • Provide continued support to ensure the quality of the website content.

Research:

  • Observe the online activity of similar organizations; research and report on social media best practices.
  • Complete other communications research projects as assigned.

Analytics and Reporting:

  • Use Google Analytics to assess trends and activity on the Global Witness website.
  • Use Twitter Analytics to assess trends and activity on the Global Witness Twitter page.
  • Review data on the performance of social media platforms and adjusts plans or strategies to optimize reach and social media ROI. 

 

Requirements: 

 Must be a current student or recent graduate, with coursework or commensurate experience in international relations, human rights, communications, journalism, marketing, media and/or public policy.

  • Data analysis and familiarity with Excel.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills;
  • Detail oriented with thorough writing, research and web-based skills.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem solving and analysis skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to successfully work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Non-English language skills are a bonus but not required.
  • Strong interest in anti-corruption, natural resource governance, international development, human rights or environmental issues.
  • Eligible to work in the U.S.
